What’s in a hobby?
Recently I was called out by a dear friend of mine who stated that Netflix is not a hobby.
I agree and disagree because Netflix can be a wonderful release. Exhausted humans need a break sometimes and it’s wonderful to sit back and bask in the talent and stories that come from others.
However, Netflix is not a rewarding hobby. Really think about how much time you spend sitting, doing nothing, and just watching TV. For most of us it’s appalling right? I am guilty of this, I admit it. Most of the time I put something on in the background to keep my thoughts from going rampant, but it still takes up a lot of my time.
“Find three hobbies you love: One to make you money, one to keep you in shape, and one to be creative.”
Sylvia Plath
Creating is so important, even if it’s just for yourself. The act of taking parts and pieces and molding and putting them together to create something new or different. It’s so satisfying and rewarding. It stretches your brain-muscles and encourages self-expression and problem solving.
As a kid I loved creating art. Sculptures, paintings, mud-pies and mud-castles, macaroni necklaces, craft time was the best time. Mom and Dad were so great at encouraging creativity, no matter how messy.
But for the longest time I stopped making art. When you’re the little sister of an amazing artist who has won awards, been featured in museums, and exhibits in Washington D.C. it’s hard to motivate yourself to try when in your eyes it won’t even compare.
I have recently learned the most important part about creating. Never, EVER compare your work with someone else’s. Everyone is different and grows and blooms in different ways and times, just like the art they create.
The important thing is to do it. Go out, stretch your creativity muscles, and try a new worthwhile hobby. You may find a new passion that inspires the rest of your life.
In the spirit of putting my money where my mouth is, I tried a new thing. I have a rather large rock/crystal collection, so I tried my hand at wire wrapping stones. And I love it. It came quite easily to me and the results are beautiful.
So I want to send a thank you to my friend for inspiring me to pick up a hobby other than just Netflix. What are you inspired to try today?
I appreciate your support and am so thankful to have you here!
